Dehradun is located in the Doon Valley in the foothills of the Himalayas nestled between two of India's mightiest rivers - the Ganges on the east and the Yamuna on the west. Dehradun is famous for its picturesque landscape and pleasant climate and provides a gateway to the surrounding region. It is well connected and in proximity to popular Himalayan tourist destinations such as Mussoorie, Nainital and Auli and the Hindu holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh along with the Himalayan pilgrimage circuit of Char Dham

The city of Dehradun has various tourist spots like the Tapkeshwar Shiv temple which derives its name from water droplets originating from a rock falls on the Shivling placed in the shrine. The Sahastradhara is a sulphur spring located about 14kms from the city. It literally means thousand fold springs. The Malsi Deer Park is located 8kms from Dehradun enroute to Mussoorie. It is a wonderful picnic spot and can be enjoyed with children. The Robber’s Cave is another important picnic spot located 8kms from Dehradun.

The Tibetan temple on Rajpur Road is a colourful Buddhist temple. 15kms from Dehradun is the Santaula Devi temple. While at Dehradun, you can undertake excursions to places like Lacchiwala, a beautiful picnic spot; Rajaji National Park which displays a variety of flora and fauna and Dakpathar which is located 45kms from Dehradun. Dehradun also hosts some important fairs of the region like Jhanda Fair, Tapkeshwar Fair, Laxmansidh Fair, Bissu Fair, Mahasu Devta Fair, and the Shaheed Veer Kesri Chandra Fair.

The climate of Dehradun is generally temperate, although it varies from tropical. Dehradun is an all year round tourist attraction with cool winters, warm summers and crisp mild monsoons.

Dehradun Summers (March to June): have a maximum temperature of 35 °C and a minimum of 17 °C. Most of the tourists prefer this period for visiting Dehradun.
Dehradun Monsoons (July to September): offer mild to medium rainfall during which period the destination looks more attractive.
Dehradun Winters (December to February): have a maximum of 22 °C and a minimum of about 3 °C. Snowfalls are common feature during this season.


Tourists may keep off days of hard winter and heavy snowfalls, usually in January. March to June is ideal for all sight seeings and other activities. July to September is perfect for short trips and also good for enjoying the natural scenic beuties. October to February is offering pretty cool climate and ideal for honeymoon trips. This period is good with snowfalls and is the period of flowering in Dehradun.
